In the Next Room, or the vibrator play

In the Next Room, or the vibrator play

A touching and hilarious story about a young doctor and his next-room-web-imagewife in the Victorian age. Dr. Givings is obsessed with the marvels of technology and what they can do for his patients. He isn’t sure exactly how the vibrators help the women he treats – but they keep coming back. The only woman who isn’t helped is his own wife, who longs to connect with him – but not electrically

In the Next Room, artistic director’s notes:

Who is in the next room? Reading, and now watching, In the Next Room, or the vibrator play I have felt it was not me in the next room. As a man, this play is for me, but not about me. When men think about women’s sexuality we are on the outside, looking in.

In the last 100 years, men’s sexuality has changed, but not like female sexuality. From the Suffragette movement to the Pill to the modern war on women, in the last 100 years female sexuality has been, and is, about change and redefinition.

The one thing that has not changed throughout is the power of love. From the time I first read In the Next Room until it opened this has been a play about love. About what fills our lives when we do not feel we are fully loved, and what happens when love is complete.

The production of this show has been joyous. I hope, that like this show, your life is full of laughs and love.
